Decor of the deco days and fabulous staff made our dinner all the better, something really different...It was freezing cold and we wanted a dinner out in Katoomba but not a main stream joint, something with character. Well we certainly got that at the Avalon! Situated in the old Savoy theatre, one goes through the foyer and up the Art Deco staircase to the “dress circle” of the theatre where the levels have been transformed into vast eating spaces. The place is over flowing with bric a brac from a past era and nothing, I mean nothing, matches. The lampshades amused us as most of them, and there were a great many standard lamps, were upside down on their stands with a jaunty look of “whatevs”! Quirky as! The open kitchen is situated in the former projection room! The place is like a huge second hand shop, where you can eat!The servings are large and the cuisine is very home style, hearty with Rosti and cabbage accompaniments has a sense of European influences. I certainly got the pick of the menu. I had a fillet steak and always asking for rare is a gamble. It was stunning. Fresh horseradish cream was blindingly good!During the day one would get mountain views from the huge plate glass window but at night the draped coloured lighting adding to the quirkiness. The staff were absolutely delightful - up for a chat and so friendly.
Cannot believe in all the times I have visited Katoomba that I hadn’t been before! Definately will not be my last visit! What an amazing eclectic place, with every table a different setup! Nice to go to a restaurant with live music too. Great food, great drinks and great service. Definitely recommend.
The Avalon is my favourite restaurant in the Blue Mountains. The staff is responsive and fun and always makes excellent suggestions re vegan options. I always enjoy the art deco interior, art displayed on walls, or live music. Lovely Place - lovely food - lovely people!
Eccentric, fun restaurant... We really enjoyed lunch here recently. Located in the old Savoy Theatre Avalon brings the charm of the old movie house with loads of character and resplendent in movie memorabilia. We were lucky enough to score a table by the window with gorgeous views of the valley beneath Katoomba. The service was old school friendly but slick and the wait staff are clearly having fun. The food was very good bistro style with a nice selection of entrees and mains. And the wine list featured a wide variety of Australian labels. We will certainly be back.
Fun!... Eight of us enjoyed a very nice evening. It was the Winter Magic Festival and we’re pleased we booked an early dinner. The regular menu is quite simple at first sight and there’s a few daily specials. When the meals arrived we were surprised at the generosity of the servings. Every dish was flavourful and satisfying. We particularly enjoyed the Duck and Steak. Our servers were attentive and very pleasant. The decor and accoutrements are truly delightful. A memorable experience!
What a wonderful experience! Rare weekend away and Friday nights food and atmosphere was so good, we came back Saturday night. The staff were friendly and relaxed, yet so professional in their service. Highly recommend!
Lovely, filling meal in a quirky restaurant. It’s hard to tell from street level that this interesting and friendly restaurant is upstairs, but it’s definitely worth a visit. Salmon salad was delish and lamb with beautifully done fresh veg was also awesome. Staff super friendly and characterful.
