Bronwyn Kirkpatrick is a shihan (master) of the shakuhachi (traditional Japanese bamboo flute) who studied with grand-master Dr Riley Lee in Sydney for seven years. Bronwyn will play a mix of traditional zen pieces, her own compositions and some improv, followed by Q&A with the audience.

Step out of the festive season mayhem and into your balanced self with the assistance of these deeply transporting sounds.

Bronwyn holds a Bachelor of Music in clarinet performance, graduating from the Canberra School of Music, ANU with Distinction in 1994. She has played the shakuhachi with the Bell Shakespeare Theatre Company, the Sydney Dance Company and TaikOz. She has been awarded numerous awards and prizes, including a Churchill Fellowship and an Australia Council Skills and Arts Development Grant, which enabled her to further her studies in Japan with Kaoru Kakizakai, Teruo Furuya, Kazushi Matama and Katsuya Yokoyama. Bronwyn was a prize winner at the prestigious All-Japan National Music (Hogaku) Competition (for Traditional Japanese instruments) in 2005 and a finalist at the S-1 World Grand Prix Competition at the World Shakuhachi Festival in 2008.

Bronwyn has performed at numerous festivals nationally and internationally, including the World Shakuhachi Festival, the OzAsia Festival, Sydney Sacred Music Festival and the Four Winds Festival. She performs regularly as a freelance artist, both as soloist and in combination with western and traditional instruments. Bronwyn is an active teacher of the shakuhachi in Sydney, Australia and around the world via Skype. She also teaches clarinet and recorder from her home studio in Katoomba.
